Woodland Blue

The aforementioned Cordelia Gartside features on the first track of the indie-folk debut EP from, also brighton-based, Woodland Blue. Safe House is really quite good, have a listen below.

John Smith – Great Lakes out today

Fourth studio album Great Lakes is self-released today by the acoustic-guitar master John Smith. Playing at London’s southbank centre tonight should be a treat for all involved (including me) as John makes his way round the UK for the first tour in a couple of years.

Also head over to daytrotter to hear a recent session he did for them, i’m listening to it as i type this, it’s pure aural gold!

Be right back

So its been quite some time since I last posted, this therefore may turn into a large one. I’m going to try to update on what i’ve been listening to (both old(ish) and new(ish)), some new bands and releases plus a couple of tours to check out.

Let the procrastinating stop and lets crack into the beast (is that a saying? not sure).

Dads

2-piece emo/punk band from New Jersey who have a couple of EPs available on their bandcamp HERE . The Lo-Fi recordings reminiscent of algernon cadwallader are all amusingly titled such as my favourites “If Your Song Title Has The Word “Beach” In It, I’m Not Listening To It” followed by the next track “Get to the Beach!”

They are dirt cheap to download and definitely worth a listen.

Hop Along

Debut album “Get Disowned” by Philadelphia band Hop Along has just been released In the UK via Big Scary Monsters and has not stopped playing on my ipod. Female Vocalist and songwriter Frances Quinlan fronts with brother and an old school friend to complete the trio.

Female lead vocalists rarely strike a chord for me but for Hop Along and Frances’ powerful and dynamically diverse vocals I am a junkie. She manages to take her voice to the next level

Download, Buy, Steal whatever just get this album here

Also they will be playing at Old Blue Last in London on 28/4 with Toby (MMISL and SASO)

Turtle Bus

Video from a session Turtle bus did in Huddersfield also check out Bottles from the same session.

I played a gig with them last week however it wasn’t at all like these videos. It was the bands alter-ego Crazy Bastard Turtle Bus and we played this:

TTNG

With a new album comes a new name. This Towns Needs Guns now go by TTNG due to sensitivity, with them now touring across the pond and the US’ love for shooting people, they thought it might be best.

I’ve somehow managed to see TTNG about 5/6 times in the same amount of months so have now seen most of this album live. Its, as you’d expect, brilliant live and on the record.

So Much Light / The Speed of Sound in Seawater / Mansion Closets

Damien Verrett is a Californian Musician and is part of four-piece group “The Speed of Sound in Seawater”. “So much Light” is his solo acoustic project and “Mansion Closets” is his Third and more-experimental electro effort.

All three outlets have different things to offer but with Damiens distinct vocals tying all three together.

Gulfer

Montreal based Math-rock three-piece Gulfer have quickly become one of my favorite new artists after i heard their split with fagio.sepia. Now they have just released their 2nd Ep “Transcendals”

Birthmark

Nate Kinsella, Math-rock pioneer from bands such as Joan of Arc and Make Believe, has just finished up a European tour supporting TTNG. But just before that he did a headline show in London in support of his newest release “Antidotes” which i was lucky enough to attend. Kinsella was calm and organized considering its a one-man band set-up with loop pedals, glocks, guitars, drums and a bunch of samplers and outboard effects the result being beautiful and poignant.

John Smith

John Smiths fourth studio release (the third was a covers album) “Great Lakes” will be out 25/03. Here’s a fantastic teaser video

There will also be a accompanying tour

Photo: My Spring Tour is on sale now, folks!

Someone Died

AKA Alan Welsh from Tangled Hair has been playing solo shows for a while, joining Joey Four and Shoes and Socks off on their epic front man tour as well as playing with Birthmark. He now has a couple of tracks up for free on his bandcamp.

Richard Parker

I remember playing with these guys at a show in Huddersfield with my old band. Since then we have sadly disbanded but Richard Parker have fortunately not. The new track (posted below) is quality reminiscent of an explosions in the sky tune. And with support slots with Maps & Atlases, Mutiny on the Bounty and Tall Ships it seem that it is only a matter of time until Richard Parker become a staple in the math/post-rock scene.

Also check out their three track EP

Atoms For Peace

Thom Yorke’s band Atoms For Peace, which also includes Flea and Nigel Godrich, surprised the world by releasing a new single called “Default” on iTunes. It’s an oceanic but anxious thing, running on off-kilter electronic blips but still keeping some of Yorke’s sense of the huge. Hear the track below.

Here’s a statement from Thom….

You may have heard that I have a new project called Atoms for Peace.

The name comes from some shows of The Eraser that happened a couple of years ago with Mauro, Joey, Nigel and Flea.

We got a big buzz from them and discovered loads of energy from transforming the music from electronic to live, and so afterwards, we carried on for a few days in the studio and decided to make it a loose, on-going thing.
Immersed in the area between the two…electronic and live.

The first tune we’d like you to hear is Default
A 12″ vinyl version will follow next month and an album will eventually follow that next year.
Thom

Shoes and Socks off – Final Release and tour

Shoes And Socks Off is dead, long live Shoes And Socks Off.

The end of the line is approaching for the acclaimed solo project of ex-Meet Me in St. Louis front man, and former Shield Your Eyes bassist, Toby Hayes…but the Big Scary Monsters mainstay is offering a parting shot with the free ‘As We Get Closer The Room Gets Smaller’ EP and a selection of UK dates for his retirement tour.

The saddening announcement of SASO’s plans to call it a day closely followed the release of his fifth LP, ‘Miles Of Mad Water,’ a Shoes And Socks Off album unlike any other. It showed him moving away from stubbed-toe blues and acoustic melancholia that his fans had come to expect, drawing more upon experimental electronic influences and beat-driven, avant-garde melodies. It ended cryptically with the line “you’ll never hear from me again, I’m out of here…” and soon came this announcement:

“Ever since the first show, Shoes and Socks Off has been a bit of a pain in the arse. Bloody thing. The restrictions I place on it, and the fact that pretty much all the songs are about one very personal subject, make its functioning depend too heavily on me maintaining a certain level of ‘mope’, and in all honesty I don’t have the stones to maintain said mope any longer.

I’m not sure if it was at all cathartic or even much good, but it was certainly necessary, so I’m grateful to those who backed me up over the last 4 years.”

And indeed, this free four-track EP, Hayes’ final offering under the SASO name appears to do away with the ‘mope’ and exorcise the last of his demons, offering the vindication he needed…Hayes’ goes out with neither a whimper or a roar, just a matter-of-fact mumble that “now I’ll never write another song about how much I miss you…” – and that’s that.

And so we invite you to say goodbye to one of the true artists in modern British music with one final EP and a BSM all-star farewell tour. The final date of which (September 24th -London, Old Blue Last) falls on the fabled Meet Me In St. Louis Day, which celebrates the 5th anniversary since the release of the bands one and only album.

September Dates – FINAL TOUR:

Weaponess

Scarborough student four-piece Weaponess seem like they may be ones to watch for the future, evolving effects and dynamics through polished technical guitar riffs  and unpredictable song structures have drawn me to the conclusion that i am a fan already. Although still lacking some musical maturity (which seems not that far away) the EP on their bandcamp and single track on facebook are recorded to a good quality which makes for pleasant listening.

Don’t take my word for it though have a listen yourself.

Nosferatu D2 – Free live download

On March 5th, 2007, Nosferatu D2 stepped on stage for the final
time as the opener for Los Campesinos! and Sky Larkin. We didn’t know it was to be their final show (and neither did they), but by luck someone was there to capture it on tape in DIY fashion.

Nosferatu D2’s debut LP was released by Audio Antihero in 2009. Though it has been long since their dissolution, “We’re Gonna Walk Around This City with Our Headphones On To Block Out The Noise” has continued to pick up fans and acclaim, even becoming a story for a couple of BBC radio features. The enduring response this album has enjoyed is something we could never have seen coming despite all our faith in their music.

Though not a professionally recorded release, these songs have been
remastered by Audio Antihero artist Benjamin Shaw, who has brought the mix to life. Most of us never got the chance to see the duo live and now never will; with that in mind, the missed notes, awkward crowd response and crackling audio are just footnotes in this welcome document of their last stand

Download it here, why wouldn’t you? its free!

BSM sign TOE

Big Scary Monsters Sign Japanese rockers Toe for new EP!!

The Japanese math rock band will make their first ever trip to Europe this September, to coincide with the release of their new EP, ‘The Future Is Now’.

Toe is composed of Kashikura Takashi on drums, Yamane Satoshi on bass, and Mino Takaaki and Yamazaki Hirokazu on guitar. Formed in 2000 they’ve spent the past decade building a huge online fanbase around the world  based on their mostly instrumental music, with the swift and acute drumming of Takashi and their melodic, clean guitar settings at the core. Toe are well renowned back home in Japan for creating a thrilling, beautiful live sound incorporating acoustic guitars, rhodes piano and vibraphones, something they’re excited to debut in Europe later this month.

Their first album, ‘The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety’ was released in August 2005, followed in December 2009 by ‘For Long Tomorrow’.

‘The Future Is Now’ EP is released in the UK and Europe via Big Scary Monsters on October 1st, on CD and limited edition 10″ vinyl with an exclusive t-shirt, available to pre-order now via our webstore. A new album is scheduled for release in 2013. Our friends at Topshelf Records will be handling a US release of the EP.

Toe tour Europe for the very first time this September. They play just one UK date, with pre-sales selling out within a matter of days, and only a small handful being reserved for sale on the day.

16.09 – RU – Moscow – Astral Festival
17.09 – DE – Berlin – Festsaal Kreuzberg
18.09 – DK – Copenhagen – Pumpehuset
19.09 – BE – Brussels – Magasin 4 |

Fresh Meat | Introducing… Cleft

2039150416-1

Through brilliant early production values, interesting images of Jimmy Hill and most importantly, with an extremely promising and break-through EP, Cleft might sound like an alien entity now, but wait a few years and we’ll wager that you won’t be able to get away from them.

Consisting of just two frantic members and formed little over a year ago, Cleft are just getting round to the release of their second EP titled ‘Whale Bone’ after the fruitful sounds of their ‘Utter EP’ were “their sound is the most professional and direct we’ve heard from a band this fresh and young in ages”heard not long over four months ago. Riddled with the dominating sounds progressive rock, the swiftness of hardcore and presented with the edge and fearlessness of modern instrumental noise, their sound is the most professional and direct we’ve heard from a band this fresh and young in ages. Listening to their new five-track, the duo make more than enough of an entrance from estranged artists to well-known musicians, with the quickening opener of ‘Gulch’ drawing interest in seconds as undeviating drums mix with FX-drenched guitars, blasting compelling and immense ideas and evolutions.
Taking from where bands like Adebisi Shank and Battles might have left off, Cleft are a band full of thoughtful, ‘right-here, right-now’, alternative instrumental-rock concepts. Not shying away for too long in introductions, preludes and postludes, sparse middle “a band full of thoughtful, ‘right-here, right-now’, alternative instrumental-rock concepts”sections or endings, their straight-to-the-point rawness and directive narrative in head-crushing composition and performance is the perfect format for any new band.

So with new music this good, there’s no point in wasting anymore time. Go get well and truly indoctrinated with Cleft’s own thrusting style of ‘Turbo-Prog’ right now and pick up a copy of ‘Whale Bone’ via their bandcamp HERE (To be released 22nd September).

Keep up to date with Cleft’s goings on and ‘Like’ them on Facebook HERE

The Little Unsaid

I saw The Little Unsaid by accident a year or so ago, just happened to stumble into Bar 1:22 on a random night in Huddersfield. I was completely overwhelmed by the whole experience, bought both CD’s that were available to purchase and signed myself up to the mailing list. Since then they constantly appear on my personal playlists. The Band revolves around John Elliott who masterfully builds and evolves songs using a loop station, an acoustic guitar and angelic falsetto voice. Sometimes reminiscent of Radioheads Thom Yorke. There are some great videos online and i was pressed as to which one i was going to blog.

So i picked two

Now living in London i believe, hope and expect so much more to come from The Little Unsaid. If you like what you heard you can pick up some releases from here

Jairus Documentary

As far as hardcore music goes my interest and knowledge is minimal at best but Jairus are a band that have always spoken to me. I have been a fan for the last 5 or 6 years, through which time they have been through many line up changes and split up and reformed again. It is all explained in this very entertaining documentary about the 10 year history of jairus.

Catch them in manchester this october (see a carefully planned festival post)

Scottish multi-instrumentalist Chris James Marr shows off his looping skills, in this beautifully crafted sound scape Silo the Fire.
He has a couple of pay what you like downloads available on his bandcamp, both of which are excellent. There are definite hints of Mike Kinsella’s Owen there, through the distinct guitar style and arrangements.

Shoes and Socks Off is Over!!

Just received an email from Toby Hayes aka Shoes and Socks off, if you haven’t read it here it is…

Closing.

The time has come for me to shut this thing down. As much as I love it, I’ve now have to go out into the desert and dig a hole…

Ever since the first show, Shoes and Socks Off has been a bit of a pain in the arse. Bloody thing. The restrictions I place on it, and the fact that pretty much all the songs are about one very personal subject, make it’s functioning depend too heavily on me maintaining a certain level of ‘mope’, and in all honesty I don’t have the stones to maintain said mope any longer.
I’m not sure if it was at all cathartic or even much good, but it was certainly necessary, so I’m grateful to those who backed me up over the last 4 years.
I’m proud of what was achieved and blown away at the level at which a select few people have connected with the songs and shown their love and support. If you came to a gig, put on a show, bought a record or let me sleep on your floor, thank you.

Final Shoes and Socks Off dates:

September
15 – Southsea Festival

Mega Front-Man Tour with Someone Died (someonedied.tumblr.com) (Alan Welsh/Tangled Hair/Colour)

The final show falls on the world famous Meet Me In St. Louis Day, not only that, but it will mark four years to the day since the first Shoes and Socks Off album was recorded. Neat.

I’m working on a whole bunch of new stuff. There will be one last SASO release. Four new songs on a ‘pay what you like’ download-only EP called As We Get Closer The Room Gets Smaller. This is a sort of ‘post-script’ to Miles of Mad Water, and ties the whole project off in a satisfying ‘full circle’ kind of way. That’ll be out shortly.

Down in Brighton, Adam Crisp (Entrepreneurs) just finished mixing the new Love Among The Mannequins EP (loveamongthemannequins.tumblr.com) (it sounds SO good!). That’ll be out soon, and we’re about halfway through writing the follow-up to our LP, Radial Images.

I recently finished recording the debut album of a very skilled songwriter who goes by the name of Chalk(stalkchalk.tumblr.com). The album is quite honestly stunning. I’ll make a fuss about it once we have found someone to release it.

Just finishing an album by Lunchtime Sardine Club (thelunchtimesardineclub.bandcamp.com). Very rad music by a good friend, who kept super quiet about his talent until now.

Finally, I’m really excited about my new project, Bermuda Ern (www.bermudaern.co.uk). We have written an album which should be out before the end of the year, if we can find someone to release it. It’s all beats, noise and lounge, and it’s the most expressive fun I have had musically in a long, long time. I’ve missed the ringing ears. Think I’ll focus on this for a while.

Everyone around me seems to be settling down and getting jobs. Most of the dudes I’ve toured/worked/played with have done a lot of growing up since SASO began. I’ve shared so many good times with too many folks to thank them all here, so I’ll just briefly acknowledge the smack-pack and be done with it:
Endless thank you’s to Nev Bartos, Shoulders, Dreamboat, Dirty Otter, the Brummies, Snaever, James Bryant, Alex Polakowski, Rhys Baker, Euragh!, Ellis Gardiner, Langley, King Among Men, Rico, Heather Steele, MTBRD, ACDSleeve, Arran Gregory, Shark, Al Petersen, Steven Stride, Jonny Fucking Baker, Oli Newton, NickyB, Nitkowski, Tall Ships, Delta/Alaska, Tubelord, Tangled Hair, Mossy Motown, Mrs BSM, Sam, Jay, Mench, Stef & his Tascam, Pip, Pop & Associates, and Aïcha.

So that’s it. This all feels real positive. Laters.

Toby.

Devastating news for fans  but sounds like there will be more musical output from toby yet so i shall hold off on the tears for now.

And there is always the farewell tour.

Sad sad day.
